What Social Sites May Have Done to the Anticipation of Family and School Reunions

By Marlene A. Mania

Remember when family reunions, and school reunions were a thing to really look-forward to? The reunions kept us connected by allowing us to re-connect socially -- at a physical get-together? They allowed us to interact by reuniting with people whom we may have become very out-of-touch with? The anticipation of exploring where they have been and who they might have become, all added to the excitement of reunion.

Well, it may be obvious that social websites like Facebook may have overshadowed the general part of physical party-reunions (perhaps, to some degree). Connecting face-to-face and one-on-one with the physical world, is always a plus -- no doubt. However -- social websites like Facebook, clearly make the wonderment of not knowing 'what became of so-and-so', a thing of the past.

The cyber-world makes keeping-in-touch with distant relatives and friends, as easy as clicking a button. An individual can layout an expressive profile page, for all-of-the-world to see just what their status is, and just what they have been up to, what they look like now... and so much more. It's all up to them - to share with the general world, and the more-local familiar folk.

The ability to seek/search people on social sites like Facebook -- for people who are interested in reconnecting, and staying connected, is really... quite a wonderful thing.

To sum-it-up... Now-a-days, an individual does not need to wonder about losing-touch with loved-ones or old-friends. The immediacy that comes with the accessibility, that the social sites offer to connect and reunite -- is as easy as a quick profile/status read; a subtle 'poke'; a friendly invite; or a quick message. All possible, with the ever-growing social networks.

However, in support of the physical reunion parties: An actual big warm hug and a smile, will never replace a subtle online... nudge or poke (of course).

Thank you for sharing this information, Marlene.
The world of communication has certainly gotten smaller and more instant.
I've just started on facebook at age 75, could be interesting.
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes.
Frederick

I won't be surprized when they figure out how to do the big warm hug over the Internet too.

Marlene, this was a wakeup call for me. I always wondered why we needed Facebook when we have e-mail. You have given me something to think about. Thank you.
